PUBLICO Bistro & Bar
Welcome to a new place with a punchy concept for all you cool cats!
By all accounts, bustling Jalan Senopati area has become the new ‘it’ place to be for many Jakartans. Publico Bar & Grill feels like a trip down memory lane to the wonderful jazz era of 1920’s New York.
The décor of the Ryst Group establishment features an airy retro-chic interior, with red brick walls and warm wooden floor juxtaposing nicely with classic black-and-white tiles. During the day, the restaurant is bright and welcoming, but come night time, it turns into a groovy spot with sensual, dim lighting.
A cool interior is one thing, but what about the food? In a word: excellent! On our visit, we began with the scrumptious 24-Hour Marinated Chicken Wings (45k); grilled in a charcoal grill oven, served with spicy smoked paprika and mint aioli. We also ordered the “Mulberry and Spring” (35k); prawn, scallop and herbs wonton served with sweet chili sauce. A nice take of the old Manhattan Chinatown favorite.
Publico proudly boasts the Inka Grill, a top-of-the-line charcoal grill imported directly from England which is said to be one of the best in the business. And the proof is in the pudding, or rather, the steak. The Stockyard Black Angus Rib Eye (225k) is grilled to perfection, served with rustic potatoes, grilled asparagus, mushrooms and a side of garlic butter for an extra oomph. The luscious Rustic Lamb Chops (195k) is also a winner here; served with grilled vegetables, rustic garlic thyme potatoes, with gravy mint sauce. A definite must-try! Here, they really do their meat right.
For a flavorsome mix of East and West, the Duck Aglio Olio (70k) is a great choice. The homemade Sambal Matah relish gives a good amount of kick on this pasta dish! The Crispy Soy Glazed Black Cod (75k) is another noteworthy dish; pan seared black cod glazed with sticky soy sauce.
Feel like having chicken tonight? Go for the Oven Grilled Chicken Breast Stuffed with Pesto (75k); served with basil tomato concasse and butter mashed potato.
Make sure you make room for the delicious desserts. The Peanut Butter Sandwich (45k) invokes nostalgic childhood memories; a homemade bun filled with peanut butter gelato, topped with peanut brittles and salted caramel sauce. And the Chilled Valronha Mars Bar (55k) is an interpretation of the famous ‘Mars Bar’ with Valronha Chocolate mousse, chocolate crumble, vanilla Chantilly, topped with salted caramel. De-lish!
The expert mixologists behind the impressive bar at Publico have whipped up a drink menu with many of the classic, handmade libations of a bygone era, as well as a few modern creations using the best seasonal ingredients and liquor available. The use of dry ice adds a certain dramatic effect to many of the cocktails here. Try the Mango Cabana (100k); a mix of gold rum, Cointreau, mango puree, lemon juice, bitters, mango caviar pearls. Or the classic Old Fashioned (100k); a blend of bourbon, caramelized sugar, orange bitters, with maraschino cherry.
But the innocent-looking Boston Tea Party (95k) is a superb, potent mix of Kurant vodka, crème de cassis, cranberry juice, lime fruit, citrus spray, served with minus 80 degree centigrade ice cubes!
With an inspiring setting and the seemingly endless choices on offer, Publico is a newcomer that will no doubt make a good kind of stir to the local dining scene.
