Akri Hohakai, a car theft specialist that is alleged to have been involved in more than 20 crimes in five cities was caught by a team of Java-Bali police on Tuesday.
From the results of the investigation police say the 28-year man was like a “Robin Hood” figure in his village of Gresik, East Java, as he often gave away the stolen property to his neighbours.
“He was renowned as a philanthropist in his village and it appears no one knew he was a thief,” said Police Commissioner Harry Haryadi during a press conference at Police Headquarters Bali, Thursday.
Even more intriguing was that after every theft he held a celebration in his village. “If the robbery was successful he would slaughter a goat,” said Haryadi.
When police gave chase, the long-haired man was shrewd enough to fool the police many times.
Akri’s adventures came to an end on Tuesday when the police ambushed his village home in Gresik, East Java.
From the hands of the suspect police confiscated many pieces of evidence which included an iPad, 11 mobile phones, seven wristwatches, and bank books containing savings of tens of millions of Rupiah.
Police shot Akri in the left leg on Wednesday when trying to escape while investigating the location of a theft near Suwung bypass in Denpasar.
