Prisoners were caught ordering illegal drugs direct from overseas suppliers from a prison in Jakarta on the weekend.
“According to the confession, they were messaging directly to Shenzhen via cell phone,” said Deputy Drug Eradication (BNN), Brigadier Benny Mamoto in Jakarta yesterday after BNN succeeded in capturing three prisoners at the LP Cipinang last Saturday morning.
All three were arrested in their respective prison blocks. “They’ve given us their contacts in China, but we cannot direct the operation over there. There are diplomatic procedures,” said the Brigadier.
According to Benny, the trio successfully used mobile phones to control the delivery of the goods. In fact, every day they received a report from the network via sms. “This proves our enemy in the drug mafia has a very neat coordination,” he said.
One of the prisoners was linked to an operation smuggling nearly 1.5 million ecstasy pills that BNN successfully intercepted. The pills sent through the post were found by customs officials last Monday (5/28/2012). The goods entered under the name of the Primary Cooperative Kalta Intelligence Agency and the Army Strategy (Bais TNI). BNN has arrested eight suspects, including a member of the military with the rank of Sergeant Major.
It was the biggest operation in the last 10 years. The TNI-owned cooperative’s name was used as a cover to save the package from inspection. And since, it has been found that the ecstasy was scheduled to be distributed to dealers in places of entertainment in Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Bali, Medan and Makassar.
“We still continue to investigate and arrest members of the syndicate and this case could unfold completely to its roots,” he said.
