The Bali Provincial government is set to introduce new regulations that control the use of agricultural land so that overdevelopment does not infringe on Bali’s ability to produce food. Agricultural land has been dwindling in Bali with the advent of tourism related developments.
Bali Head of Agriculture Made Putra Suryawan said regulation was needed to maintain at least 81,900 hectares of agricultural land area if Bali wanted to be able to produce a surplus of rice.
“Without the protection of the government, we are concerned the conversion of agricultural land for tourism development will be out of control,” he said.
Bali Tourism Office records the number of hotels in Bali at this time has reached 2190, with 45,408 rooms. Conversely, Bali’s rice production has fallen from 878,000 tons to 846,000 tons.
Along with the reduction in farmland, many farmers have found employment in the tourism sector with a recorded 673,928 farmers in 2010, and 643,029 in 2011.
“Regulation will also set up an incentive for farmers to retain their land,” Suryawan said.

I heard years ago that the government was placing a moratorium on commercial Villa and Hotel development, since then Hotel development has flourished and just look at what’s going on right now ! It’s not about stricter laws, it’s about policing and enforcing them. All anyone cares about is getting paid for the I.M.B. and the consequent building tax, no one really cares what the end result will look like. Just look at the disgusting, tall buildings going up on the left and right hand side of the road going up the hill to the Balangan crossroads and beyond, a road traveled on by everyone visiting the Temple at Uluwatu.
I was in Aus when the earthquake hit and was truly hoping they had fallen down, not to be.
Not that it would take much for the ugly monstrosity on the Eastern side to fall down.

Guests visit here —many of them to see the verdant rice fields. I am happy to see the governement stepping in to protect the green belts. Tourism is booming (now), but if the building doesn’t stop, the tourism undustry will have the opposite problem of the rice. Now there is not enough rice for Bali
If we don’t protect the rice
soon there will not be enough tourists for Bali (to fill all the newly built rooms in the vast amount of hotels here—-of which very few still overlook rice fields
