  THE BEAT UPDATE 153

The Beat magazine edition 153 is out Friday. Pick it up in the usual places.

Editorial

Well, we just had the world’s number one DJ visiting our shores. That was Thursday night so too late for us to print this week. You’ll be able to read about that in edition 154.

It makes you wonder what is going on when you see thugs setting the agenda. No matter what you think about Racy Magazines, Sharia Law, Porno Bills or Freedom of Expression, violence should never be the means to achieve any change in law in any democracy. While protests and demonstrations in Jakarta against terrorism or blowing up innocent people are non-existent and the blame for everything at the moment seems to be placed on immorality you are only left to think the people must be in favour of thuggery and opposed to the rule of law. Burying your head in the sand is not a solution. At this timely moment, the Global Healing 2 conference in Ubud will be taking place from May 3 - 8. Dignitaries and speakers from all over the world will be here to discuss ways to make this world a better and safer place to live. We wish them well. Check some of the entries to our Recipe for Peace competition from last week. (Page 30)

Meanwhile, we checked out some of the best barmen around town doing there flairing thing and that can be found inside in all its glory. Check if you can spot your favorite barmen amongst them. (Page 36)

The Beat Comp this week deals with the Global community. Bali must be one of the most cosmopolitan places in the world, all living in harmony, and continues being a jetsetters paradise. You’ve seen them around but can tell you us where they’re from. Have a guess and you will be in the running for a two night stay in a one bed unit at one of Bali’s famed luxury villas. B Villas in Oberoi have been so kind to give us the prize for this competition. (Page 62)

Surfing is a way of life for many people on this island. Gino has a chat with a couple of visiting Pros who were in Bali to shoot some footage for a video featuring a new surf spot on the island. We found out everything except, of course, where that new spot is. (Page 80)

The Easter weekend was a rammer jammer, busy in all the hot spots and it’s just the beginning – summer is on the way! Ed.

The 3rd Bali appearance for Jakarta’s grovilicious funk champions – Maliq & D’Essentials, a neo soul group that mixes a boogie-worthy blend of soul, R&B, classics and a wee bit of jazz n’ blues. But seeing them kick out the jams live is most definitely worth the ticket. From 11pm
