Global Battle of the Bands

A world wide competition to find the best unsigned original band in the world is coming to Indonesia and Bali. From over 22 countries participating, the overall winner will receive $100.000 and no doubt loads of fame and glory, but that’s a long way off. First, the Indonesian heats will take place during July/August with the finals in Jakarta in November. We spoke to the organizers of the event, Nepataya last week and they are expecting between 600 – 1000 bands to enter the comp nationwide. All members of the bands will have to pay a registration fee of $25 and if you are interested in fast-tracking your musical career, find out more from the websites - www.gbob.com or contact us at The Beat

Monte Does it again
World record ocean swimmer Monte Monfore has done it again! Early in the morning of May 3, 2005, the athlete, who swims, amongst other reasons, to raise awareness of ocean conservation and for the Acehnese people affected by the Tsunami, became the first person ever to swim from Nusa Lembongan Island to Bali, setting a new world record in the process. He swam the 17-kilometer distance in 3 hours, 4 minutes. He’s swum the channel before but only successfully from Nusa Penida and after attempting the same swim earlier this year from Nusa Lembongan but calling it off because of bad conditions, this latest attempt was the fourth channel crossing he had successfully completed. Monte thanked Bali Property and Bai Hai Cruisers, amongst many others, at a press con at Gado Gado last weekend.
Action!
Bali seems to have become a film making paradise and according to Deborah Gabinetti of the Bali Film Commission there have been over 40 projects filmed on Bali in 2004. Quoted from Locations magazine she said that Director Marc Esposito’s Toute la Beaute du Monde, starring Marc Lavoine and Zoe Felix, finished shooting on Bali and the neighboring island of Lombok, at the end of last year and going to press, discussions were under way with producers Kennedy Miller (Babe, Mad Max) to film the Australian thriller Mango River on Bali.

Two Tribes Stay in Town

After last week’s proclaimed ‘Battle of the Raves’ up at GWK come August, we’ve now been informed that the Two Tribes gig has been re-located to 66, the outside grounds and Paparazzi on Aug 10. One of the biggest DJ line-ups to be seen in Bali including Tall Paul, Agnelli+Nelson, Mark James, Dylan Ryhmes, Marco Polo, Taro, Naro and more are confirmed to play. Loads of visuals and all the extras are sure to help make this one helluva party.Castaway is scheduled to take on GWK mid August.

Confirmed international players include, SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA AND ARANTXA SANCHEZ-VICARIO, KAROLINA SPREM, PATTY SCHNYDER, GISELA DULKO. Mr Livesey also added, “The tournament will confirm more international women tennis players as we get closer to the dates, and we are confident that this year’s tournament will once again promise an exciting fun-filled tennis attraction for tennis lovers and tennis players throughout the world, Indonesia and more specifically Bali”.

Heavenly Nights
The Westin Resort, Nusa Dua, Bali successfully held a HEAVENLY NIGHT OUT to welcome the resort’s new General Manager, Mr. Jan Bundgaard, on Friday, 6th May 2005. Saharadja and DJ James entertained while the Westin’s restaurants supplied some heavenly samples of their enticing cuisine for guests. Pictured here is Jan appearing to be singing a rendition of “Your Heavenly Eyes” but in fact, is bouncing on one of the Heavenly Beds scattered around the party area, praising their virtues.

Underground Street Jazz
Apparently, there’s quite an underground jazz scene happening in a Carpark in Sanur on Saturday nights. Young Jazz Enthusiasts have been hanging out and playing their music at the carpark at Warung Lapal in front of Natrabu Restaurant on the by pass. Bogie from Traffic Blues informs us that he and others are doing their thing, including visitors from Jkt and elsewhere, on Saturdays from 10pm and beginning to get quite a crowd down there. | Check it out, Jazz Heads!
