A 3 days contest from the 6th to the 8th of May 2005 at Keramas beach turned into a serious and treacherous contest; this beach is the latest surfing point to have been discovered and Hawaii based pro surfer brothers Bruce and the current 3x world champ Andy Irons had “contracted and blockaded” the beach for a couple of hours to film for a surf video. You can do anything with dollars and fame brah…anyway the event actually comprised 2 different contest, first, the Billabong Pro part of the Indonesia Surfing Championship and second, the Von Zipper Shoot Out that matches the top 16 pro surfers from Indonesia against Western surfers. Both days scored different styles of wave, with a little two foot swell on the 1st day rising to 4 feet on the 2nd, making things a little wilder. Some wave slaves dropped in from Bali’s east coast but the majority were west side, doing some crazy manoeuvres on the waves above these big freakin’ pieces of lava rocks that threatened to chew your ass off on a wipe out. Big name like Rizal surprisingly got eliminated in their 1st round and Betet scored a big tube ride, polished with a frontside aerial that made the crowd erupt. Finally, Bol scored the podium and an oversized cheque worth 10 mil rups for the Billabong contest, while Pepen wasthe numero uno for the Von Zipper Shoot Out. A typical tropical surf contest with a bashable right hander, girls in bikinis, thumping beats, sate lilit and beer goggling legends. //gino++
