Bali Fashion Week

Bali Fashion Week this year showed that it has become more than just a creative forum for designers but also a major fashion industry trade show for the whole of Indonesia. With over fifty participants in the exhibition hall displaying their products and services the objective now appears to be focusing on the attraction of business on a grander scale. Simply getting a few orders for the designers presenting their collections on the catwalk is now only part of the story.

Big production and textile houses from all over the country were spotted amongst the stalls out the back waiting to make contact with the foreign buyers in attendance. This all makes a lot of sense since Indonesia is one of the bigger exporters of garments – all kinds of garments – around the world and has the industrial capability to do a lot more. With the ever increasing competition coming from north Asia it’s not surprising the Indonesian government and in particular, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the National Agency for Export Development and local government bodies are getting behind the Bali Fashion Week [and have done for many years]. They all see the BFW as a springboard for Indonesian and Balinese trade to meet the world. But is that so?

Most exhibitors and designers won’t really know for sure if the BFW was beneficial to them or not until the contacts made over the three days actually come home to roost and transform into some kind of order. That could take days, weeks or months but like all trade shows it can be hit and miss and there’s no guarantee of making a strike at all. There’s always a risk doing a trade show, both for organizers and participants. “Will anyone turn up?” “Will it be worth it?”
It’s similar to advertising really - if you have a good product that you really believe in, it’s worth it. If not, forget it. The designers we saw on the catwalk fell into both areas. Some were breathtaking and others we had to wonder why they bothered but I guess there are all kinds of motivations in entering a public forum like this. comments continued next page...

Fashionistas take your seats

There are definitely two sides to the Fashion industry. One being the beeewtiful, flamboyantly artistic side - full of glamour, butterfly kisses and opening nights.

The other, the nuts and bolts industrial side of making patterns, cutting fabric, sweating it out making garments and basically, taking risks in business. The Bali Fashion Week tries to gel these two aspects together and almost does successfully.

One of the things we noticed last week was the lack of the Rockin’ Fashionista types that can be seen hanging at the best parties, taking advantage of every situation for their own betterment while being ever so fashionable. Where were they?
BFW should be careful not to ostracize the show element of Fashion in favour of the nuts and bolts end of the game.

It’s good and noble to help the industry and fashion business in growing further but they still have to keep the razzmatazz of the show to keep the punters coming. Next time it could be better having the best designers hand picked for the shows and leave it at that. However, it’s always fun seeing the shows and let’s hope that next year it will be bigger and better and with the right time and organization we’re sure it will be getting ever stronger in the future.
